Can a body in motion generate connection? Why have we been dancing since the dawn of existence? Is dance a document? Can dance
reveal history? How does dance become political? In what way does dance liberate? Is dance inherently ritualistic? How does dance
create revolution?

BAILE FOGO is an artistic research project, supported by Associação Alfaia’s residency program. It’s aim is to analyse dance as a document of cultural and individual identity, revealing history through a moving body and becoming political when used as a voice. Coexistence and catharsis.

The project focuses on the “corridinho,” a dance from the Algarve folklore, examining its story, origins, and future. It seeks to contextualize and deconstruct tradition while accepting it. During the residency, the creator learned the basics of “corridinho” through classes with the Rancho Folclórico and Etnográfico de São Sebastião in Loulé, Portugal. The project culminates in an immersive installation, incorporating audio and video, inviting the public to question the nature and capacity of bodily expression.
